GrayRobinson’s Mayanne Downs, along with GR shareholder Jason Zimmerman and co-counsel Michael A. Sasso of Sasso & Sasso, P.A., successfully represented Jeff Aaron, a GrayRobinson shareholder and the chair of the Florida Sixth District Court of Appeal Judicial Nominating Commission (JNC), at the Florida Supreme Court. The petitioner, State Senator Geraldine Thompson, alleged the JNC’s nominations to Governor Ron DeSantis violated the Florida Constitution and the JNC’s rules of procedure. In less than one month, the Florida Supreme Court ruled in favor of Aaron and the JNC, affirming that the constitutional residency requirement for judges attaches at the time of appointment—not at the time of nomination. This was a big win for GrayRobinson in its efforts to support the JNC and the Governor.
