GrayRobinson Attorney Matt Bowles today presented “Controversial Speech in the Workplace: What to Do in These Turbulent Times?” at the Florida Public Human Resources Association (FPHRA) 87th Annual Conference on Sunday, July 23, 2023, at the Grand Hyatt Tampa Bay in Tampa, Fla. The presentation detailed employee misconceptions about the exercise of free speech in the workplace, further reviewing the extent to which public employee speech is or is not protected by the First Amendment or under other legal authorities, as well as a public employer’s right to discipline employees when they engage in speech that crosses the threshold into unprotected speech.
