Community Leader Forum – Orlando – Roger Oxendale, CEO, Nemours Children's Hospital

On Friday, August 22, 2014, GrayRobinson’s Orlando office hosted a Community Leader Forum featuring Roger Oxendale, CEO of Nemours Children’s Hospital. Oxendale spoke about how Nemours is bringing pediatric care closer to Florida families.

Nemours is one of the nation’s leading pediatric health systems dedicated to achieving higher standards in children’s health by offering a spectrum of clinical treatment, research, advocacy, and educational health and prevention services extending to all families in the communities it serves.  In the past year and a half, Nemours Associates have cared for 79,000 unique patients at all its Central Florida Nemours locations.  That number includes patients from: 49 different countries, every continent except Antarctica, every state in the United States except Idaho, and 59 of Florida’s 67 counties.  Many are coming for very specialized care that often is not found in other parts of the country.  Families come to see the only surgeon in the southeast to specialize in treating children with intestinal failure, two pediatric interventional radiologists (of which there are only 100 in the country) and the region’s only doctor who specializes in the treatment of neuromuscular disorders.

One powerful component of Nemours is its sophisticated electronic health record which the hospital, nine pediatric primary care locations, nine pediatric specialty care facilities, and five urgent care locations share a single electronic records system.  So, if a doctor at Nemours Children’s Urgent Care tests a child for strep throat, the child’s pediatrician at Nemours Children’s Primary Care will be able to see the results.  If the child needs to visit Nemours Children’s Hospital or a Specialty Care location, the team of specialists there has the child’s complete care history.  This seamless approach means fewer duplicated tests. Nemours believes strongly that this is the safest and most cost effective way to deliver healthcare to families.

Oxendale currently serves as Chief Executive Officer of Nemours Children’s Hospital, the integrated pediatric health campus at Lake Nona Medical City located in Orlando, Florida. Joining the organization in April 2010, he also functions as a Senior Vice President for Nemours. Prior to joining Nemours, he served as CEO of Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC and as president of the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh Foundation. Appointed chief operating officer of the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh in 2000, he helped found Children’s Community Pediatrics, the largest pediatric and adolescent primary care network in western Pennsylvania. Beyond his dedication to pediatric health care, Oxendale enjoys supporting the communities in which he lives. He has served on the boards of a number of nonprofit organizations dedicated to youth including The Pittsburgh Project and the Greater Pittsburgh Council of the Boy Scouts of America. He has also been recognized by Clarion University as a distinguished alumnus, having received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees there.

Through its Community Leader Forums, GrayRobinson brings together clients, attorneys and friends of the firm to hear high-profile business and community leaders and elected officials discuss issues of importance to the state of Florida.
