ORLANDO, FL – July 18, 2014 – Michael J. Canan, shareholder in GrayRobinson’s Orlando office, will serve as a panelist at an upcoming employer workshop titled “Introduction to Self-Funding: What Employers Need to Know,” presented by the Marsh & McLennan Agency. The workshop will discuss the basics of self-funding a group benefits program – the terms, financial implications and federal laws. Attendees should include CEO’s, CFO’s and Human Resources and Benefits managers interesting in curbing their health plan costs and considering self-funding their benefits program. As part of GrayRobinson’s Employee Benefits practice area, Canan's experience includes all phases of qualified retirement plan work, with special emphasis on the establishment and continued maintenance of ESOPs; plan design, including cross-testing, defined benefit plans, and 401(k) and (m) features; controlled group and affiliated service group issues; IRS and DOL administrative problem resolution; and nonqualified deferred compensation.
Canan has also authored/co-authored two books published by the Westlaw Division of Thomson Reuters (both updated annually) on retirement plans and employee welfare benefit plans, including health plans. In addition, he also authored and published a book discussing the healthcare and the Affordable Care Act.
He received his undergraduate degree from Stanford University, his Juris Doctor from Berkeley Law at the University of California, and a master’s degree in taxation from New York University.
